Cannes’ European Audiovisual Observatory workshop to focus on women in the film industry

The European Audiovisual Observatory’s annual Cannes workshop will focus on the contribution of women to today’s film industry. Held on the first Saturday (17 May) of the Cannes Film Market (14-23 May), Girls Just Wanna Have Film! will examine possible solutions in order to encourage more women to make films.

The event will host the presentation of different studies regarding the hot topic at hand: the European Audiovisual Observatory will be looking at admissions, percentages of female directors and genre issues, while the French CNC and the British Film Institute will tackle the issues of the place of women in the film industry and female screenwriters, respectively. The workshop will be followed by a panel discussion that will address the possible paths the industry has to take in order to reach its objectives.

The CNC’s Benoît Danard, the BFI’s Vivienne Avery, Eurimages’ Susan Newman and European Audiovisual Observatory executive director Susanne Nikoltchev will be among the speakers taking part.

The Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, will also provide its traditional round-up of market intelligence as well as looking at recently adopted European film rules, such as the new Cinema Communication.
