French Cinema in Hungary

Taking advantage of the popularity of French films in Eastern Europe, Unifrance, the agency that promotes Gallic cinema abroad, has organised the 7th edition of the French Film Festival in Budapest on 25-27 April.
The first edition was held in 1997 and since then Gallic cinema has made great inroads with Hungarian audiences, with attendance rising from 176,000 to over 800,000. Hungarian distributors released 34 French films in 2002 (23 of which in the French language). Of the 10 new EU member states, Hungary is the best market for Gallic films.

This year’s programme includes the premieres of 8 features all of which will be distributed throughout Hungary from now until the summer: L’auberge espagnole by Cédric Klapisch, La Mentale by Manuel Boursinhac and Speak To Me of Love by Sophie Marceau – distributed by Best Hollywood. The festival’s special guests include Régis Wargnier, Sophie Marceau, Emmanuelle Devos, Judith Godrèche, Danièle Thompson, Cédric Klapisch, Jean-Pierre Limosin, Eduardo Noriega, Manuela Boursinhac and Jacques Audiard.
