Extracts from tonight's press conference given by the jury of the competition at the 67th Cannes Festival, its award-winning filmmakers and actors.

Jane Campion (chair of the jury): "We had a discussion, but we don't know precisely who voted for who, because it was a secret ballot with a majority of five votes. There were lots of us and we liked lots of films, but we didn't have enough awards to go round, so we debated it for longer. When I read the synopsis of Winter Sleep [+see also:

and saw how long it was, I was a bit scared. But the film has such a wonderful pace that I was captivated. It's a very masterful, sophisticated and intelligent film, and that, among other reasons, is why it was awarded the Palme d'Or. As for The Wonders [+see also:

, we really liked the character of the young girl, who was just like life itself, as she's so real. This film has many layers and builds up its own world.”

Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Palme d’Or for Winter Sleep – read the review – sold by Memento International): “I feel a bit odd. I've already received many awards, including several at Cannes, but this time it's the Palme d'Or. When I wrote the screenplay, I wasn't thinking about the commercial aspect; I wrote it as a novel without questioning myself, and I was surprised when I realised that it was very long. However, the characters convinced me to opt for a very long running time. And what motivates me to make a film is exploring the dark side of the human soul.”

Alice Rohrwacher (Grand Prix for The Wonders [+see also:

– read the review): “It's wonderful. I've been continually surprised – first of all to have been selected in competition, then to have been called up to receive an award and finally to have received that prize.”

by Mike Leigh – read the review): “It's incredible. I don't usually expect anything. I've had supporting roles for the vast majority of my career and leading roles only for the last five years. And the role that has earned me this award was given to me by Mike Leigh, the director whom I respect the most."
