The Domino Effect wins at Krakow Film Festival
- The Polish documentary has taken the top prize at the 54th edition of Poland’s oldest film festival
In a year in which the prize list was dominated by Polish films, Elwira Niewiera and Piotr Rosołowski’s The Domino Effect has won the top award at the 54th edition of the Krakow Film Festival. The movie is set in the run-down resort of Sukhumi (the capital of Abkhazia, a republic separated from Georgia and controlled by Russia) and sees the local Sports Minister decide to boost the prestige of the country, which is not recognised by most states, by organising the World Domino Championships there.
The Golden Horn Award was bestowed upon the title by a jury chaired by Polish filmmaker and cinematographer Wojciech Staroń. Meanwhile, the Silver Horn for the director of the best medium-length documentary went to Dani Wasserman for the Israeli film Do You Believe in Love? The Golden Dragon for the best film in the International Short Film Competition was awarded to legendary Polish animator Jerzy Kucia for Fugue for Cello, Trumpet and Landscape. The Silver Dragon for the director of the best documentary went to Juliette Touin for The Big House. The Obvious Child, directed by Stephen Irwin, was chosen as the best animated short film, while The Phone Call – a UK title starring Jim Broadbent and Sally Hawkins, and directed by Mat Kirkby – won the Silver Dragon for the best fiction film.
A jury chaired by Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz granted Amanda Sans and Miquel Galofré the Golden Heynal Award – the main prize in the DocFilmMusic Competition – for Songs of Redemption. My Prairie Home, directed by Chelsea McMullan, received a Special Mention.
Furthermore, the jury of the National Competition, chaired by documentary filmmaker Jerzy Śladkowski, awarded The Domino Effect the Golden Hobby-Horse. The Silver Hobby-Horse for the director of the best documentary film went to Jan P Matuszyński for Deep Love. The jury chose Hippos, directed by Piotr Dumała, as the best animation, while the Silver Hobby-Horse for the best fiction film was awarded to Kacper Lisowski for Father’s Day.
Finally, Summer 2014, directed by Wojciech Sobczak, received the Prix EFA 2014 for best European film.
The festival is organised by the Krakow Film Foundation in cooperation with the Polish Filmmakers Association and Apollo-Film.
