After making a couple of shorts and documentaries, and having worked on films and TV series such as Danish pubcaster DR’s Borgen, Danish director May el-Toukhy has started six weeks of shooting at Copenhagen locations for Long Story Short [+see also:

, “a modern story about the difficulties of love”.

Scripted by Maren Louise Käehne together with el-Toukhy, the romantic comedy has a local, all-star cast consisting of Mille Lehfeldt, Jens Albinus, Trine Dyrholm, Peter Gantzler and Cecilie Stenspil, in addition to newcomers Danica Curcic (Danish Shooting Star at the recent Berlinale), Marijana Jankovic and Swedish actor Ola Rapace.

Drawing on her experience from stage productions, el-Toukhy had organised three weeks of rehearsals before principal photography began, in which – with the cast and co-writer Käehne – she developed and fine-tuned the characters and the plot about a group of friends and their highs and lows in pursuit of romantic happiness.

“In our part of the world, we do not choose our partners out of duress or duty to ensure the family’s survival; we choose each other primarily out of desire. So it can also be difficult to handle, when a relationship turns out to be full of mistakes and neglect, not living up to what we dreamed of. I want this film to strike a blow for an imperfect love life – which is the reality for most of us, although it may not look like it,” el-Toukhy said.

After Copenhagen, the production of Long Story Short will move to the island of Funen, together with cinematographer Rasmus Videbæk (A Royal Affair [+see also:
