Fantasporto is to launch a digital crowdfunding campaign that aims to ensure the sustainability of the 35th edition of the festival, scheduled to take place from 27 February to 7 March 2015.

In a statement made to the Lusa news agency, the festival’s director, Mário Dorminsky, explained that the decision has been made because of the difficulties in finding sponsors among national companies, although he also pointed out that he is still waiting for various firms to confirm that they will take part.

The crowdfunding campaign will take place from 5 September to 1 November 2014, and participants are expected to receive an amount of compensation that is proportional to the sum they transfer to the bank account of Cinema Nova, which organises the event. The options range from €5 to €5,000 – and giving the maximum amount would mean that the person concerned would then become a “patron” of the festival, according to the festival’s Facebook page.

Fantasporto 2015 will celebrate the centenary of the birth of Orson Welles and will screen a restored copy of Top Hat, as part of a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers retrospective. As yet, there have been no further details on the other sections of the event, which this year crowned Japanese film Miss Zombie by Hiroyuki Tanaka with the Best Film Award in its competition.
