FIAPF accredits Black Nights Film Festival as a non-specialised competition

- The decision places the Estonian festival in the same league as Cannes and Berlin, allowing it to stake a claim as one of the 15 most important in the world

FIAPF accredits Black Nights Film Festival as a non-specialised competition

Tallinn’s Black Nights Film Festival will be accredited as a non-specialised competitive festival from 2014 onwards, as confirmed by FIAPF (the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations). Black Nights Film Festival is the 15th international film festival to be inducted into that category.

The move will see the event join other FIAPF-accredited non-specialised competitions, such as Cannes, Warsaw, Berlin, Karlovy Vary and Venice. The change will mean that Black Nights will widen the geographical reach of its international competition programme and will include feature films from all over the world, effective from the upcoming edition, to be held from 14-30 November 2014.

Tiina Lokk, the founder and director of Black Nights FF, explains: “There are around 4,000 film festivals held annually, and only 14 have been authorised by FIAPF to hold a non-specialised international competition. On behalf of the festival management and the team, I am deeply moved by the recognition of some 18 years of hard work by the Black Nights team, which has resulted in us becoming the most influential festival in North-East Europe.”

Established 18 years ago from a Nordic film week, the Black Nights Film Festival became a FIAPF-accredited specialised competitive festival in 2008, with a competition specialising in European and Asian films. Black Nights also serves as an international gateway to the region through its Industry@Tallinn platform, the fastest-developing meeting point for professionals in North-East Europe.
