Two Swiss films in Toronto and San Sebastian

Chrieg from Simon Jaquemet will have its world premiere in competition in the New Directors section at the San Sebastian International Film Festival. Jaquemet’s first feature film is about youth, about that difficult and ambiguous period that is adolescence. Without a doubt, it’s not easy to be accepted in a world that views “difference” as something dangerously subversive. Matteo, an androgynous character fruit of Simon Jaquemet’s imagination, will have to pay the price of a life led off the beaten track. Chrieg was developed at the Torino Film Lab and produced by the Zurich production house Hugofilm.

Iraqui Odyssey, a documentary film from Samir is instead being presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in the prestigious TIFF Docs section. Samir’s latest feature is about his Iraqi family, a middle class family that’s scattered all over the world, from New Zealand to Russia, via the US and France. Iraqui Odyssey pushes us to reflect on the radical change in society and the effect that this society has on its inhabitants, on a people’s mentality. The modern-day Iraq portrayed by western media has no longer much to do with the Iraq of the 50s and 70s: a mysterious, fascinating and exotic land. Samir’s camera guides us through history, through the changes in a society that is radically changing face. Iraqui Odyssey is produced by Dschoint Ventschr Filmproduktion AG, Coin Film, WDR - Westdeutscher Rundfunk Köln, Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen and Sanad Fund.
