The 18th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, running from 14-30 November, has announced its first competitions, featuring a selection of North American and European titles.

The festival’s North American Film competition focuses on films from the USA and Canada, and will include the international premiere of Allure (directed by Vladan Nikolic), a movie that examines the plight of five women. The jury for the North American competition will include Judy Ahn (South Korea), Yohann Comte (France) and Kristjan Kongo (Estonia).

The Tridens Baltic Sea and Nordic Debut Film competition will see Tridens award a grant of €5,000 to a film, with the best cinematographer receiving €1,000. The ten titles will include recent Latvian horror movie The Man in the Orange Jacket [+see also:

 (directed by Andres Maimik and Katrin Maimik), which premiered at this year’s Karlovy Vary. The jury will include Dr Martin Botha (South Africa), Zaza Urushadze (Georgia) – the director of the popular Estonian-Georgian co-production Tangerines [+see also:

 – and Anu Veermäe-Kaldra (Estonia).

The best Estonian feature film will be awarded a grant of €3,200 by Tridens. The festival will also give out the first Best Young Estonian Actor Award, named after Estonian-Polish film actor and singer Bruno Oja. “The grant for the best young actor was the initiative of the legendary Polish actor Daniel Olbrychski. The Bruno Oja Foundation will give out the award annually from now on,” said Tiina Lokk, director of Black Nights.

The international competition programme of the 18th Black Nights Film Festival will be announced at the beginning of November.
