Written by Winding Refn and by Mary Laws, the screenplay of The Neon Demon describes a terrifying story that will be played young actresses. When asked about his inspiration for this project, the director said: "one morning, I woke up and I realised that I was both surrounded by women and dominated by women. Oddly, I had this pressing desire to make a horror movie about vicious beauty. After directing Drive and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew that I had to go back there to tell the story of The Neon Demon."

Production will be managed by Lene Borglum, partner of Refn in their joint venture, Space Rocket. Filming will begin in the first quarter of 2015 in Los Angeles with photography director Philippe Le Sourd (The Grandmaster), film-editor Matthew Newman and composer Cliff Martinez.
