The emerging Slovak director Vladimír Mičúch, who works under the female moniker Aramisova, is readying his feature debut, Kids from the East. Aramisova has already started building up a promising career for himself: the founder and editor-in-chief of an art magazine was accepted into Prague’s FAMU school in 2008, where he studied under the tutelage of Czech maverick Věra Chytilová and Jasmina Blažević. He mainly focuses on the theme of relationships in his short-film works, which include Cagey Tigers, chosen for Cannes’ Cinéfondation short-film selection in 2011, and I Like Nora, which won the Best International Picture Award at Curta Cinema, the shorts festival in Rio de Janeiro, the year before.

Kids from the East has already won the top prize at the Agora Awards at the tenth Crossroads Co-Production Forum in Thessaloniki, covering full post-production image and sound for the project from the outfit Two Thirty Five, while the producer, Michal Kráčmer of cinédix, picked up the Promising Young Producers Award at the 13th Baltic Event Co-Production Market in Tallinn. According to the project description, Kids from the East is “a movie about children’s desire for adventure and the power of friendship that develops through a joint experience of danger. The main hero, ten-year-old Sasha, is a member of a child gang that consists of school classmates and operates at the local housing estate. In order to keep the peace with his friends in the gang, he must take part in all sorts of illegal activities, such as stealing cigarettes from a newsstand and burning lanterns during a procession. While performing these illegal activities, Sasha is terrified. Eventually, he gets caught, and his parents find out the truth about his behaviour during a regular parents’ meeting at school. They then change their ways and bring Sasha up differently, but nobody could have imagined what this change would lead to.” Principal photography is scheduled for summer 2016, and will take place in Slovakia and Ukraine.

Kráčmer is also producing the feature debut by Jan Kolber – a gay love story called The Beauteous, which is set for theatrical release in September 2016.
