The Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur on the guest list for the Oscars
by Giorgia Del Don
- Like its compatriots Visions du Réel and the Locarno Film Festival, the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur has also made it into the prestigious club of Award Qualifying Film Festivals
The good news, announced by Winterthur’s local councillor, Michael Künzle, on the occasion of Cadrage, an evening of Zurich Film Awards, caused great delight for the artistic director of the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur who considers this nomination as proof of the success of the festival: “This is international recognition for the quality of our show and for the excellent reputation of our jury members”.
Being part of the list of the Award Qualifying Film Festivals allows winners of the international competition (Grand Prix) and of the Swiss competition (Award for Best Swiss Film) to automatically participate in the run for the Oscar for Best Short Film (for all non- documentary films). Obtaining such a privilege is certainly no mean feat, rather it requires years of patience and perseverance. Only festivals that can show that are at the forefront of the international film scene can hope to obtain entry to the prestigious club. With its trio (Locarno, Nyon and Winterthur) Switzerland can certainly be proud of this milestone. A result that gives visibility and credibility to increasingly hard-to-please festivals.
