- Dome Karukoski’s comedy took 458,637 admissions, while seven other local films reached more than 100,000 in 2014
Last year, Finnish director Dome Karukoski’s comedy The Grump [+see also:
film profile], about a die-hard old man facing the changing world, became the fourth Finnish movie since 2000 to exceed 400,000 admissions: it sold 458,637 tickets of the more than two million that were sold for local fare, which controlled 27% of the market.
It was only the third time since the start of the collection of Finnish cinema statistics in 1970 that local films accounted for more than two million admissions tickets, according to the annual figures published by the Finnish Chamber of Films.
“It was a good year for domestic films in general, with 32 feature films released – eight Finnish productions passed 100,000 attendance, and three qualified for the chart of the five best-grossing films,” explained international communications officer Kati Nuora, of the Finnish Film Foundation.
Standing out among the international achievements, Selma Vilhunen’s short Do I Have to Take Care of Everything? was nominated for an Oscar and Leif Lindblom’s Raspberry Boat Refugee won the Nordic Film Award in Haugesund. J-P Valkeapää’s They Have Escaped [+see also:
