The most “arthouse” and experimental side of Portuguese cinema will be represented at the 65th Berlinale (5-15 February) by two films that have been selected in the Forum and the Forum Expanded, two of the most daring sections at the Berlin-based festival.

Rabo de Peixe, by the duo Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel, is a new edit – a director’s cut – of a documentary shot on the island of São Miguel (in the Azores) between 1999 and 2003, focusing on a community that devotes itself to local, small-scale fishing, and examining the relationship that develops between the fishermen, the sea and death itself. One of the fishermen, Pedro, is a young man who dreams of buying himself a boat and assembling a work crew.

The organisers of the Forum empathised with the subject matter, the film’s way of dealing with it and, as the press release highlights, “the intoxicating shots of the sea, boats, black beaches and white houses, which equally allude to states of mind”.

, their much-lauded diary in the guise of a film, which won an award at the Locarno Film Festival in 2013.

In the Forum Expanded, audiences will be able to discover Iec Long. Having already been presented at the first edition of PortoPostDoc in December, the latest collaboration between João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata is a short film that marks the return of the two filmmakers to Macau, where they also shot The Last Time I Saw Macau [+see also:
