In 2014, Danish films recorded 3.3 million admissions (as against 4.1 million in 2013) to control 26.5% (30% in 2013) of the market, with five titles among the top-ten chartbusters, including number one and number two: Mikkel Nørgaard’s The Absent One [+see also:

Although total ticket sales dropped to 12.3 million, down from 13.5 million the previous year, the chairman of trade association Danish Cinemas, Kim Pedersen, classified 2014 as “a good average year” and fixed his sights on “all the records in 2015”.

He had strong expectations for a series of US blockbusters that have had their Danish premieres delayed, such as James Wan’s Furious 7, Peter Sohn’s The Good Dinosaur, Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of GreyBrad Bird’s Tomorrowland, Andy and Lana Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending, and Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin’s Minions.

“But also, this year’s five most popular films – both the two local and the three foreign releases (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and How to Train Your Dragon 2) were all parts of franchises. They all performed better than their prequels, and this is likely to continue,” Pedersen explained.
