Norwegian director Erik Richter Strand, who most recently delivered Varg Veum – The Dead Have it Easy (2012) after two straight-to-DVD films in the Norwegian thriller franchise, will present his first TV series, The Valkyrie, at the Berlinale Co-Production Market (8-10 February).

The Berlinale has for the first time handpicked six projects for the CoPro Series, a new event for pitching and networking, to accommodate the market’s growing interest in top-quality series. The Valkyrie is the only Nordic entry in the programme, which includes German director Tom Tykwer's first effort in the genre, among other titles.

Produced by Eric Vogel and Nina B Andersson, of Tordenfilm, for Norwegian pubcaster NRK, the 8 x 45-minute series is scripted by Strand and Thomas Seeberg Torjussen, and takes place in an illegal medical clinic run by Doctor Ravn in an old underground bomb shelter from the Cold War.

Doctor Ravn treats criminals and other patients who cannot – or will not – go to an ordinary hospital. At the same time, he tries to find a cure for his wife’s unexplainable disease. Production will start in August on a six-month schedule and a €6.3 million budget, and The Valkyrie will be aired in 2017.

Educated at the Norwegian National Film School in Lillehammer, Strand has been awarded both for his shorts and for his music videos; his feature debut, Sons [+see also:

(2006), also won several prizes. He is currently involved in Occupied, TV2 Norway’s political thriller series created by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø.

The Valkyrie is part of a four-TV-series package that the Norwegian Film Institute has backed by €3 million in production funding. The package also includes Norwegian directors Per Olav Sørensen's Nobel (from Monster Scripted), Gunnar Vikene's The Third Eye 2 (Rubicon TV) and Øystein Karlsen's Day 4 (Viafilm).
