The 100-Year-Old Man made all the difference

film profile] – Swedish director Felix Herngren’s adventure comedy, which took 1.1 million admissions – Swedish films controlled 25.1% of the local cinema market last year, the highest share since 2009.
Also scripted by Herngren, the Robert Gustafsson starrer was launched during Christmas 2013 and recorded a total of 1.6 million admissions, according to statistics from the Swedish Film Institute.
Otherwise, the strong Swedish performers were films for children and young audiences – six of the ten highest-grossing local releases were in that category, according to Johan Fröberg, head of strategic intelligence and statistics at the Swedish Film Institute.
In 2014, Swedish theatres sold 16.3 million tickets – down 2% on 2013 – and recorded €171 million gross box-office receipts, which was 0.5% more than the previous year, but still 7% less than in 2012, from the release of 247 full-length pictures (as against 246 in 2014).
American films controlled 58.2% of the market, down 6% – mainly because the number two in the charts, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, was this year considered to be a New Zealand title, while earlier instalments in the franchise were attributed to the US.
