During the Berlinale, the European Film Agency Directors (EFADs) association introduced its president, Peter Dinges, who is also chairman of the Federal Film Board in Germany. The EFADs association brings together 50 directors of European film agencies from 31 European countries, among them the 28 EU member states as well as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

The digital single market, copyright and media literacy are the main topics on the agenda for the EFADs members, and these areas will be discussed in three different working groups in order to formulate a common position. “Our new status will formalise the way we work and are structured,” Dinges points out. “Importantly, it will send a strong message to the EU institutions that they can count on a clear voice from the film agencies when they design audiovisual and cinema-related policy and initiatives, and we will speak with one voice on these matters.” As general secretary, Iveta Dimova is in charge of the Brussels-based association.

“In the discussions, we try to establish a common position,” underlines Christophe Tardieu, director general of the CNC (National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image), referring to the talks that take place on themes such as European copyright law. “We have a successful film industry in our countries that we want to build up,” states Dinges. “We don’t want to hinder the digital process, but we don’t want to damage what we have attained. We have to find a balance and retain the successful structures that we have developed,” concludes the EFADs president, who had a fruitful first meeting with Günther Oettinger, Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society. “We don’t know the concrete plans of the European Commission, but we have been listening to each other.”
