- Ranging from local politics to crises beyond borders, over 60 local titles are set to debut at the country’s top documentary meeting platform

Spread across the festival’s various international programmes as well as in the Greek Panorama section, 63 local features will be screening at the 17th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival - Images of the 21st Century (12 - 22 March), which will also be hosting 5 local projects at the Agora, the festival’s market section. 

Poised to make the most headlines of this year’s Greek selection, renowned Mourning Rock director Filippos Koutsaftis will be ending a 15-year long absence with Hail Arcadia, a poetic journey through the past and present of the Arcadian region, while the popular media mogul (and newly-minted MEP) Stelios Kouloglou, will be revisiting the Greek Junta in Escape from Amorgos, a chronicle of the 1969 international conspiracy to recover former minister Georgios Milonas from his exile in Amorgos.

Local TV doc heroes Aris Hatzistefanou and Yorgos Avgeropoulos will tackle the international, political and financial crisis in Fascism Inc and Agora - From Democracy to the Market respectively, while Tasos Alevras will scout the court where politics and pop culture converge in What Politica - A Non Political Football Story. Meanwhile, hoping to replicate the wild success of his masterpiece, Sugartown, Kimonas TsakirisThe Archaeologist will be following the titular scientist’s struggles to salvage an archaeological site in Western Macedonia. 

Marketwise, Rebecca E Marshall’s The Forest in Me (Greece/UK) will be partaking in this year’s EDN Pitching Forum, while renowned fiction director Konstantinos Giannaris will be exhibiting his documentary Lafcadio Hearn: His Journey to Ithaca in the Docs in Progress lounge, where select sales agents, producers and festival representatives gather to seek out promising material. Giannaris’ USA/Greece/UK/Japan co-production will be joined there by Mariana Economou’s The Longest Route (Greece/Finland), Apostolis KarakasisNext Stop: Utopia (Greece/Germany) and Michael Gallinski’s All the Rage (USA/Greece).
