Dogwoof closes some impressive deals at the Cannes Film Market

It has been a very busy and fruitful Cannes Film Market for Dogwoof, the UK’s leading documentary distributor, says Ana Vicente, head of international theatrical sales. The hit documentary Dior and I [+see also:
film profile], directed by Frédéric Tcheng and produced by French outfit CIM Productions, which opened Tribeca in 2014, has been sold to Brazil (Imovision), Mexico (Nueva Era), Korea (Jin Jin), Portugal (Alambique), the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Artcam).
“This is the first time one of our documentaries has been released in so many countries and has racked up great results at the box office everywhere,” adds Vicente. It has been a hit in the USA (US distributor Orchard expects to take $1 million at the box office), the UK, Australia and New Zealand, where it is currently at $800,000. The other countries that the doc has been sold to are Taiwan, Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria, Russia and Spain. “It has been selected by The TIDE Experiment, the MEDIA-supported project that gives European distributors support for promotion and marketing for day-and-date release strategies. It will land in 80 theatres in Italy next week, followed by Germany, Belgium, Sweden, the Netherlands, Portugal and the Czech Republic.”
Dogwoof has also been selling Cartel Land well at Cannes, a US-Mexican co-production that won the Best Director Award and the Special Jury Award for Cinematography for a US Documentary at Sundance 2015. It has been acquired by DCM for German-speaking territories in Europe, by Canal Plus and Zylo in France, and by Madman Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand.
