There were 2.6 million visits made to cinemas in Estonia during 2014, the Estonian Statistics Board has revealed. This marks the highest ever attendance level at cinemas in Estonia since it regained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Over the past nine years, the number of visits to Estonian movie theatres has gradually increased year upon year. 

Out of the 353 films screened in the Baltic country during 2014, 28 were of Estonian origin, 157 were US films, 148 were European and 20 originated in other countries. The average cinema ticket price was €4.90, while movie-theatre revenue stood at €12.8 million.

The most-viewed domestic movies in 2014 were Nullpunkt [Zero Point [+see also:

(directed by Martti Helde, 18,000). Attendance levels for Estonian movies in 2014 stood at a total of 123,000 – approximately 5% of all cinema visits in the country.

The most-watched foreign movies were the US productions Frozen (88,000), Rio 2 (74,000) and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (68,000).

Furthermore, cinemagoing accounted for 27% of the expenditure on cultural and sporting events in Estonia.

A total of 20 features were completed in Estonia during 2014 – eight fiction films and 12 documentaries. Alongside these, 44 fiction short films, 85 short documentaries and ten short animations were completed, giving a total of 159 films made in Estonia during 2014.
