Netherlands Film Fund: Three new projects supported
Hanro Smitsman is set to direct one of the supported titles

Three different teams comprising a scriptwriter, a director and a producer will be supported by the Netherlands Film Fund International Talent Programme in order to develop three new feature-film projects. The support scheme, which grants up to a maximum of €70,000 per team, is also complemented by help from three leading international industry experts.

Cargo: Orange brings together writer-director Joost van Ginkel and production outfit PRPL for a visually outrageous story about a highly intelligent truck driver who meets a young girl who is seeking answers to her own questions. They fall madly in love, unaware that fate has thrown them together before.

In Syrup (Stroop), a stubborn Dutch car dealer discovers that two boys heading to Iraq to join the jihad have stolen two of his rental cars. Together with the father of one of the thieves, he embarks upon a moral crusade through war-torn Iraq, where he finds an unlikely friendship, a new outlook on life and, finally, his stolen cars. OAK Motion Pictures is producing the project, written by Willem Bosch and set to be directed by Hanro Smitsman.

War also serves as the backdrop to the third supported project: Invite Me to War. Jolein Laarman is writing the story of three young soldiers in Afghanistan facing the difficulties of a military mission. Eventually, alienation takes its toll: one of them loses his grip on reality, and none of his comrades is able to save him. Shariff Korver is attached to direct this Lemming Film production.

The three projects were selected from among nine submissions pitched to an international committee consisting of Hengameh Panahi (Celluloid Dreams), Karel Och (artistic director of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival) and Mike Goodridge (Protagonist Pictures), who, from now on, will guide and support the team during the creative process.

The Netherlands Film Fund International Talent Programme will have a new application submission date, to be announced at the end of November.
