Philippa Lowthorpe begins Swallows and Amazons shoot

Television veteran Philippa Lowthorpe has commenced principal photography on her feature film debut Swallows and Amazons, adapted by Andrea Gibb from Arthur Ransome’s 1930 classic, at Lake District locations. Set in the Lake District in 1929, the film follows two families of children who are delighted when they get permission to sail to a lake island and camp there, but when they reach, they discover that they have company.
Cast members include Rafe Spall, Kelly Macdonald, Gwendoline Christie, Jessica Hynes, Harry Enfield, Dane Hughes, Orla Hill, Teddie-Rose Malleson-Allen, Bobby McCulloch, Seren Hawkes and Hannah Jayne Thorp.
BBC Films and the British Film Institute developed the film along with Harbour Pictures Productions and the companies are also producing with the backing of Screen Yorkshire, The Electric Shadow Company and Maiden Investments. StudioCanal has secured UK rights and HanWay Films is handling international sales.
Swallows and Amazons is a much loved staple of British literature and has been previously adapted for television by the BBC in 1963 and as a feature film in 1974 by Theatre Projects Film Productions.
