This year the Swiss productions that will be screened at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival stand out not only because there are so many (10 no less), but also because the people behind them (directors, actors and producers) are so young, and gifted with welcome originality and an open-minded view of the world. 

The international documentary competition brings us face to face with two filmmakers who are expert portrait painters of the human soul: the acclaimed and multi award-winning Brussels-based Swiss director Ursula Meier with Kacey Mottet Klein, Birth of an Actor and the younger Eileen Hofer who continues, with Horizontes [+see also:

, to explore her interest in the everyday lives of extraordinary women faced with difficult and painful choices. This time round it is a male-dominated universe that Ursula Meier chooses to explore, with her portrait of a young actor, Swiss-born Kacey Mottet Klein, in the different stages of his development, both personal and professional. Two glimpses into people’s lives that are very different yet both deeply unsettling.

Representing the very young and promising Swiss film industry are two Romandie-born directors, Moïra Pitteloud, who was selected for the EFP Future Frames programme with her short film The Offer, and Christophe M.Saber in the Prague Short Film Festival Presents section with his film Discipline. Two leading representatives of two film schools, the ECAL in Lausanne and the HEAD in Geneva, which are establishing themselves as true hotbeds of talent.
