. The film has enjoyed festival play at the Cork Film Festival and the Galway Film Fleadh, and 7 August has been set as the theatrical release date. A Doctor’s Sword follows Aidan MacCarthy, a young doctor from West Cork who survived some of the most harrowing episodes of World War II, including the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Dunkirk, and the fall of Singapore.

From the ashes of Nagasaki, MacCarthy was given a Samurai sword by a Japanese officer, but its provenance was shrouded in mystery. Going to Japan, MacCarthy’s daughter Niki attempts to find the Japanese officer that gave her father his ancestral sword. On her journey, Niki discovers much more about her father and his remarkable story and the war from both the Allied and the Japanese sides. The story is recreated through animation.

Lennon said, “It is a real pleasure being able to work with Wildcard Distribution on A Doctor’s Sword. It is rare that one comes across a story like Dr Aidan MacCarthy’s; he is, for me, a miracle man. His is a story where an Irishman shows the rarest combination of courage and humanity. It is wonderful to be able to share his story on the big screen all across Ireland.”

Bob Jackson produced the film with funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, the Irish Film Board (IFB), UCC, Cork City Council and Cork County Council Arts Office

Headed by Patrick O’Neil, who worked for seven years at the IFB, managing its film distribution fund, Wildcard was set up in 2013 and specialises in distributing Irish films theatrically, on DVD and on video-on-demand platforms.
