An advance on receipts for Bertrand Mandico

Five feature-debut projects have been accepted during the third 2015 session of the CNC’s first advance on receipts committee. Standing out among them is Les garçons sauvages by Bertrand Mandico, a filmmaker who turned a lot of heads with his short films (Notre-Dame des hormones, Prehistoric Cabaret and Essai 135, presented in competition at Clermont-Ferrand in 2015, 2014 and 2009, respectively, as well as Lif Og Daudi Henry Darger and Living Still Life, selected at Venice in 2010 and 2012 in the Horizons section) and his medium-length film Boro in the Box (presented in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2011). Produced by Emmanuel Chaumet for Ecce Films, Les garçons sauvages will delve into the early years of the 20th century, on the trail of six teenagers from a good family who commit a vicious crime on Reunion Island. The captain of a ship takes charge of them, but a mutiny soon breaks out, and they find themselves washed up on a wild island where their delight is intensified by all the fantastic vegetation. Tensions begin to rise within the group, and a phenomenon that is far from ordinary begins to occur...
An advance on receipts has also been granted to Cigarettes et chocolat chaud by Sophie Reine, a family comedy about Tourette syndrome, telling the story of a single father (who will apparently be played by Gustave Kervern) struggling to bring up his two daughters (with a screenplay co-written by the director and Gladys Marciano). The film is produced by Mandarin Cinéma and will be shot in September and October.
The CNC will also be backing Cherchez la femme by Sou Abadi (produced by Michaël Gentile for The Film), a comedy taking a satirical look at the issue of the headscarf among young people in the West.
An advance has also been promised to La vie de château by Cédric Ido and Modi Barry, a production by Matthew Gledhill for One World Films, which revolves around the culture of “threads” and the Château d'Eau neighbourhood in Paris.
Lastly, an advance will be used to support the documentary project Les coulisses du pouvoir by Dror Moreh (who was nominated for an Oscar in 2013 for The Gatekeepers), staged by Les Films du Poisson and also being backed by Arte France Cinéma (read the news) and the Ile-de-France region.
