Extremely well received at this year’s Berlinale, where it won the Silver Bear for Best Director, Aferim! enjoyed an enthusiastic reception in Romania. It is currently the most popular Romanian release of 2015, exceeding 72,000 admissions (read the news here).

Written by Jude together with Florin Lăzărescu, Aferim! centers on Costandin (Teodor Corban), a gendarme in 1835 Romania. Together with his son (Mihai Comănoiu), Costandin is searching for Carfin (Cuzin Toma), a gypsy slave who has run away from his boyar’s estate after having an affair with the boyar’s wife (Mihaela Sârbu). Shot in black and white by director of photography Marius Panduru, edited by Cătălin Cristuţiu and produced by Ada Solomon, the film explores the social and moral background of the period- a past closely connected with the realities of today.

Aferim! was produced by HiFilm Productions (Romania), Klas Film (Bulgaria), Endorfilm (Czech Republic), and EZ Films (France).

The nominations for the next edition of the Academy Awards will be announced on 14 January 2016. The awards will be given out on 28 February.
