The third edition of Final Cut in Venice unveils its prizewinners
- VENICE 2015: Four films in post-production from Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Iraq have received awards
The third edition of the Final Cut workshop, presented as part of the Venice Film Market at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, took place on 7 and 8 September. The workshop, which aims to offer post-production aid to six films from the South and to help them to search for partners, announced the four winners of this latest edition the day before yesterday.
Ali, the Goat, and Ibrahim by Sherif Elbendary received €30,000 in backing from the CNC, Knightworks and Titra TVS. The film, a co-production between France and Egypt (Film Clinic and Transit Films, Supported by SANAD), tells the story of Ali, who refuses to accept the death of his fiancée, Nada, and believes she has been reincarnated as a goat. "Sherif El Bendary is a director that we follow since the realisation of its four short films, of which 18 days which has been in competition at Cannes in 2012. Ali, the goat, and Ibrahim is his first feature film produced by Film Clinic. The shooting will be finished in October. We will show the film to European buyers in February. Sherif is one of the most promising Egyptian directors, wishing to make films that target a worldwide audience", announces Daniel Ziskind, Film Clinic representative in Europe to Cineuropa.
Zaineb Hates the Snow by Kaouther Ben Hania (Tunisia, France) focuses on Zaineb, a nine-year-old girl whose father has died; she then moves to Canada with her mother and her new fiancé. The project was granted €16,000 in post-production aid and €5,000 worth of distribution rights by Rai Fiction, for two years.
House in the Fields by Tala Hadid (Morocco), the plot of which revolves around the life of the Amazighs, a rural people who have been living the same way for centuries, received €30,000 in support for colour correction and sound mixing.
Separation by Hakar Abdulqadir (Iraq) is a documentary on the thousands of Yazidi Kurds who fled their city after it was attacked by Islamic State and find themselves on top of the Sinjar Mountains, with no food or water. MAD Solutions will offer a contribution to the marketing, advertising and distribution costs across the Arab world.
