VENICE 2003 Preview

De Hadeln puts it to Cannes

by

It only began three days ago and already the Cannes Film Festival has Venice breathing down its neck. Today, Moritz De Hadeln, the Mostra’s artistic director gave a sneak preview of some of this year’s highlights on the Lido.
The list of directors gathering for the landmark 60th anniversary edition includes Bernardo Bertolucci with The Dreamers, Ermanno Olmi with his Singing behind the Screens and Marco Bellocchio with Buogiorno, notte. The international selection is just as rich with people like Quentin Tarantino, Jane Campion, the Ethan and Joel Cohen, as well as the “grand old man” of Scandinavian cinema, Ingmar Bergman who, at the age of 85, will present Saraband the final part of a story he began thirty years ago with Scenes from a Marriage. The new film sees the return of Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson.
De Hadeln also hinted about the “possibles” like Walter Salles and his film about the young Che Guevara and Wong Kar Wai’s sci-fi 2046.
The only black spot of De Hadeln’s programme is the defection Michelangelo Antonioni who withdrew his three-part ensemble film Eros, which is taking longer to finish than intially expected.
