The submission period for the Best Foreign-language Film at the 88th Academy Awards is now closed. Last year, there was a historic record of 83 features submitted to the Oscars, and among the final nominees were three European productions –Leviathan [+see also:

But on this occasion, the number of submissions has dropped back down to a total of 81 films presented. Nine finalists will be shortlisted from among these, and eventually the Academy will whittle it down to five nominees, set to be announced on 14 January 2016. Ida was the 55th movie to have snagged the award for Europe, and this year there are 38 great productions that may follow in its footsteps.
