Today sees the kick-off of the shoot for Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights by renowned Hungarian filmmaker Márta Mészáros. The 84-year-old director won a Grand Jury Prize in 1984 at Cannes with Diary for My Children (she was also selected in competition on the Croisette in 1980), a Golden Bear at Berlin in 1975 with Adoption (she also won a Silver Bear there in 1987, took part in the competition in 1994 and was honoured for her lifetime achievement in 2007) and a Silver Shell at San Sebastian in 1978. Her most recent cinematic opuses were The Unburied Man (in competition at Karlovy Vary in 2005) and The Last Report on Anna (2009).
The cast of Aurora Borealis - Northern Light includes Mari Törőcsik (winner of the Best Actress Award at Cannes in 1976, made a splash over the last few years in Inheritance and Adventure), Ildikó Tóth (Relatives, Felhö a Gangesz felett [+see also:
film profile]), Franciska Törőcsik (Swing), József Wunderlich, Antonio de la Torre, Hary Prinz and Leslaw Zurek.
Written by Márta Mészáros, Éva Pataki and Zoltán Jancsó, the story revolves around Olga, who lives in Vienna. She realises that there are secrets and lies buried in her family’s past, and that she will not be able to put her own life in order until she works out the truth behind what really happened. After returning to Hungary, her elderly mother did everything in her power to keep the past a secret from her daughter and lied to her for years. But when she falls into a coma, Olga finds a mysterious photograph and starts to search for the truth...
Produced by István Major and Gül Togay for FilmTeam, Aurora Borealis - Northern Light is being backed by the Hungarian National Film Fund, which will also be in charge of international sales. The 38-day shoot will wrap on 12 December with Piotr Sobocinski Jr. serving as DoP, and the Hungarian theatrical release is slated for October 2016.
