The Brand New Testament just in the lead in the race for the Magritte Awards

by

- The André Delvaux Academy has just announced the nominations for the sixth Magritte Awards, which will be handed out on 6 February in Brussels

The Brand New Testament just in the lead in the race for the Magritte Awards
The Brand New Testament by Jaco Van Dormael

in 2011), has been nominated in the main categories, including Best Film and Best Director, and has a total of ten chances to win a Magritte statuette. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the movie is not nominated for Best Actor or Best Actress, which can no doubt be explained by its nature as something of an ensemble film. And in any case, it has indeed received nods in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories.

However, The Brand New Testament is followed very closely by a great number of films that were released this year, including All Cats Are Grey [+see also:

, the charming debut film by Savina Dellicour, which has notched up no fewer than nine nominations (including Best Film and Best Director). Hot on its heels is Alleluia [+see also:

by Fabrice du Welz (nominated in the Best Director and Best Screenplay categories, but not Best Film), with eight nods. Je suis mort mais j’ai des amis [+see also:

by Bernard Bellefroid “only” got four nods, but it will nevertheless be in the running for the two main prizes: Best Film and Best Director. Interestingly, its lead actress, Lucie Debay, is vying for Best Female Newcomer and not Best Actress, despite her magnificent performance. In view of this split in the nominations, all bets are off!

As a novelty this year, the Delvaux Academy has decided to create a new award, the Magritte for Best Debut Film. So far, this statuette has been voted for by the audience, but from now on, it will be the professionals who will decide on the winner. This year’s contenders for this freshly updated award are L’Année Prochaine [+see also:

by Vania Leturcq, All Cats Are Grey by Savina Dellicour and Prejudice by Antoine Cuypers. We should underline the strong presence of this film in the list of nominees, as it is a feature debut not only for its director, but also for its producer (Benoît Roland, of Wrong Men). The lucky winners will be revealed on 6 February.
