Xacio Baño will make his feature film debut with Trote
by Alfonso Rivera
- The Galician director, who presented his short film Eco at last year’s Locarno Film Festival, will shoot his first film, co-produced by Frida Films, in September
Trote will be a feature film that seesaws between fiction and documentary, a film that will star non-actors in real outdoor locations and will be shot in a way that really brings the story to life: this is how the team defines the debut feature film by Xacio Baño (Xove-Lugo, 1983), who studied film at the University of Leon and has worked as a producer, screenwriter and director on short films such as Estereoscopía (2011) and Anacos (2012), which competed at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival, New Directors/New Films MoMA, the Telluride Film Festival, the Mar del Plata Film Festival and Busan to name but a few.
Then, in 2014, he made a name for himself in fiction with Ser e voltar (To Be and to Come Back), which had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, and won the Canal+ Award and a special mention from the jury at the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival. His latest short film, Eco, was also presented at Locarno, in 2015.
His film project Trote was selected to participate in the Ikusmira Berriak programme (click here for more information), of the Film Festival of San Sebastián (European Capital of Culture 2016) and Tabakalera in 2015, by a jury made up of Óskar Alegría (the director of the Punto de Vista Festival, which is being held this week – click here for more information), Marianne Slot and Paz Lázaro, along with another Spanish project (IRA 26-2 by Maider Oleaga) and two foreign projects (El extraño, by Chilean filmmaker Pablo Alvárez, and Fleurette French, by New Yorker Tamyka Smith).
With the pre-production stage in full swing, Trote is set to begin filming in September, according to its producer Luisa Romeo of Frida Films, a Galician company that presented short film El caminante, shot by Adán Aliaga in New York, and María (y los demás) [+see also:
