(2013), announced on 12 February via a video on his Facebook page that he would later this year begin the shoot for a new feature, The House That Jack Built. His short message was rounded off with a quote by late British musician and actor David Bowie: “This ain't rock'n'roll – this is genocide.”

In early 2014, he was not that sure. “I don’t know if I can make any more films, and that worries me,” he said in his first interview for three years, following his self-imposed silence after the Melancholia [+see also:

press conference at Cannes, where he was accused of violating French legislation against glorifying war crimes.

But at the Venice Film Festival, his Zentropa partner, Danish producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen, declared that von Trier was writing an eight-part English-language television series called The House That Jack Built, which was in development with Danish pubcaster DR’s head of drama, Piv Bernth, and was looking for “a major international star to play the lead”.

“It is about a serial killer, as seen from the murderer’s point of view – he wants a huge cast, and from what I’ve heard, I’m sure it will be something that you have never seen before, and you will definitely never see again,” Aalbæk Jensen explained.

Last year, The House That Jack Built was still going into production for television (see the news), but it will now become von Trier’s first feature since the multi-award-winning Nymphomaniac films. His regular collaborator Louise Vesth will produce for Zentropa Entertainments, with Zentropa Sweden (Madeleine Ekman) and Swedish regional film centre Film Väst.
