It’s last orders for Álex de la Iglesia with El bar
by Alfonso Rivera
- The Basque filmmaker has begun the shoot for his new caper, the cast of which includes actors from his previous effort, Mi gran noche, such as Mario Casas, Blanca Suárez and Terele Pávez
Nobody could possibly call Álex de la Iglesia lazy: the guffaws unleashed by his last movie, Mi gran noche [+see also:
film profile], still hang in the air after it was presented at the 2015 edition of the San Sebastián Film Festival, and Monday 8 February saw the start of the shoot for his new film, El bar [+see also:
film profile], in and around Madrid, with a cast including various names from Mi gran noche, which paid tribute to the great singer Raphael: Mario Casas (in his third outing with the director, following the aforementioned movie and Witching & Bitching [+see also:

film profile]), Blanca Suárez, Carmen Machi, Jaime Ordóñez and Terele Pávez (an unfaltering presence in his films: this will be the eighth time they have worked together).
The cast is rounded off by comeback king José Sacristán, Alejandro Awada, Jordi Aguilar, Diego Braguinsky, Mamen García, Secun de la Rosa and Joaquín Climent, who will act out the plot penned by the director and his regular co-screenwriter, Jorge Guerricaechevarría (also the writer of the script for the new film by Daniel Calparsoro, Cien años de perdón [+see also:

film profile], which will be released on 4 March).
El bar is a thriller that will hinge on the sense of claustrophobia created when the motley and treacherous customers of a café in the centre of Madrid – as they are simply having breakfast, like they do each morning – bear witness to an astonishing incident that will determine the course of the subsequent few hours: one of them is shot in the head as they rush out of the door in a hurry. Not one of those present will dare to go to their aid… nor leave the bar.
El bar, which is being made in collaboration with Atresmedia Cine, is a Pokeepsie Films (the outfit owned by husband and wife Carolina Bang and Álex de la Iglesia) and Nadie es Perfecto production: both companies are also working on Eduardo Casanova’s directorial debut (read more) and the second feature by Zoe Berriatúa, En las estrellas, after they funded his debut, the daring and underappreciated Los héroes del mal [+see also:
