Spaniards and Romanians come together in Uruguay
Dragos Bucur during the shoot for Uruguay

Uruguay is a film being directed and produced by Jesús del Cerro (Carlitos and the Chance of a Lifetime), a man who also gets stuck into a lot of television work (he has directed episodes of Spanish series such as Un paso adelante, Policías, Médico de familia and Compañeros). The lead actors in this drama revolving around freedom are now looking forward to the arrival of spring so that they can shoot the final few scenes on the banks of the Danube, after they filmed in the Romanian capital during winter. The cast includes Dragos Bucur (Tuesday, After Christmas [+see also:

The plot of Uruguay follows the industrious family of Andrei (played by Bucur) in Bucharest in 1988, during the bloody communist era of Nicolae Ceausescu, who all share a small, government-owned flat. Every day, Andrei's father waits for a message that never arrives… until one day he receives a letter from the Uruguayan Embassy, which reads: “Now is the time to fight for the freedom they are being denied,” explains Del Cerro. The screenplay was penned by the director, with contributions from Manuel Feijoo, Beatriz González Cruz and Ruxandra Ghitescu.

This is the sixth time that Jesús del Cerro has shot a film in Romania, and so his career is clearly taking off to a greater extent there than it is in his own country: while he shot La sombra de Caín (1999) and Carlitos… (2008) in Spain, he has filmed the productions Ho Ho Ho (2009), The Godmother (2011), The Bride Was Stolen (2012), Ho Ho Ho 2, Family Lottery [+see also:

(2012) and The Granny (2013) in the Central European country. He has followed the opposite path to famous Romanian television producer Valerio Lazarov, who for decades enjoyed resounding success in Spain.

Despite its low budget, Uruguay is a production by Actorie de Film, which has received support (to the tune of €200,000) from the Romanian National Film Center (CNC).
