Portuguese producer Paulo Branco is producing Terry Gilliam’s upcoming film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote [+see also:

, loosely adapted from Cervantes’ classic novel Don Quijote de la Mancha.

The €15 million film, currently at the pre-production stage, is a co-production between Branco’s two companies – Lisbon’s Leopardo Filmes and Paris-based Alfama Films – along with Madrid-based outfit Tornasol. Principal photography is scheduled for September in Portugal and Spain, from a script co-written by Gilliam himself and Tony Grisoni.

For Gilliam, this is by no means a new project. The Monty Python actor-turned-director had already tried to make a successful adaptation of Don Quijote 16 years ago, which ended in disaster and gave rise to the 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha. Back then, US star Johnny Depp was attached to the project, but no cast has been announced yet for this 2016 effort.

Gilliam’s latest film as a director was the 2011 science-fiction feature The Zero Theorem [+see also:
