StepIn, which was launched four years ago during Industry Days at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival, is an initiative that takes the form of a large inter-disciplinary conference (which will be held on 6 August) during which new strategies for distributing and selling arthouse films are discussed and developed. This year the multifaceted Geneva International Film Festival Tous Écrans became the official partner of the initiative.

This year’s StepIn programme aims to spark essential debate over the distribution of Swiss films in Switzerland and abroad. As emphasised by the organisers themselves, StepIn, which was created as a platform for discussing new problems in the Swiss film industry following its exit from the MEDIA programme in 2014, has gradually become an unmissable event that responds to the growing demand from industry professionals, in Switzerland and Europe, to identify the challenges associated specifically with the Swiss film industry.

Nadia Dresdi, the artistic and international director of the Locarno Film Festival, and Emmanuel Cuénod, the general and artistic director of the Film Festival Tous Écrans, will this year invite a large group of cinema managers, distributors, producers, buyers and representatives of institutions to discuss the real possibilities of feature films produced in Switzerland to garner audiences in theatres. Competition with foreign productions and the drastic reduction in admissions make this an extremely delicate and hot topic. The round table will be preceded by a keynote speech by Bero Beyer, the artistic director of the prestigious Film Festival Rotterdam.
