by Claudio Giovannesi (which hit theatres on 1 June with Bim), and will continue throughout June with Italian and European premieres: this year quality cinema isn’t taking a break, as stipulated by FICE – the Italian Federation of Arthouse Cinemas, as it launched Estate d’Autore. Prime visioni al cinema, an initiative that supports the distribution and promotion of arthouse films over the summer period in the some 400 affiliated cinemas.

As well as Estate d’Autore, the Federation, which is headed up by Domenico Dinoia, is bringing us Racconti italiani - I documentari al cinema, a selection of six documentaries selected for international festivals that may be screened in FICE-affiliated cinemas between June and December 2016, either as part of normal programming schedules or as special events. “Our objective” states Dinoia “is to make quality films available all year round. It is unacceptable that many of the arthouse films screened at Cannes are distributed in other countries straight away whereas in Italy audiences often have to wait until the following year”. He added: “Thankfully, things are starting to change”.
