Viva wins at Motovun

The 19th edition of the Motovun Film Festival took place 26-30 July in the Istrian hill town, with Paddy Breathnach's Viva [+see also:

winning the main Propeller award.

The Irish production set in the Cuban world of drag queens triumphed in the competiton of 13 films, and the jury comprised of directors Fridrik Thor Fridriksson, Salvatore Mereu and Klemen Dvornik, and Croatian actress Alma Prica, gave a special mention to Kirill Serebrenikov's The Student, winner of the François Chalais Award in this year's Cannes Un Certain Regard.

, which world-premiered at Sundance, received the FIPRESCI Award.

The French director Emmanuel Tenenbaum's Unleaded won in the shorts competition.

Motovun's underlying theme this year was the rise of the right wing in Europe and Croatia, and it featured films such as The Erpatak Model and Aftermath [+see also:

, plus several events such as Srećko Horvat's lecture on disintegration of Europe and the ironic arm-wrestling competition dubbed "Seeking the Strongest Croatian Right". 

The traditional Partner Country section this year was dedicated to Italy, and the festival screened 14 Italian films split into three sections- I Grandi Maestriwith films from its greatest living directors, such as Baaria [+see also:

Prior to the festival, festival organizers from all over Europe participated in the three-day workshop Developing Your Film Festival, organized in co-operation with London-based Independent Cinema Office and Vilnius Film Festival, supported by the MEDIA Programme of Creative Europe
