Edinburgh’s 2nd Deaf Focus
Cinema is more than just mere entertainment; it can and does play an important role in integrating people with disabilities with mainstream society. That is the premise behind the second edition of Scotland’s Deaf Focus Film Festival scheduled for 5-6 July at The Filmhouse in Edinburgh.
The programme includes films (a variety of genres, lengths and formats) by both deaf and hard-or-hearing and able-bodied directors.
The shorts screening in the Scottish event's three sections include the UK premiere of Channel Four’s Tricks by Samuel Dore, Skye by Bim Ajadi, enhanced with music by deaf composer, Ted Evans, and Amanda Mundin’s dark comedy, Hear No Evil.
There is also a special section for children and families with France’s Key to the Stars and the UK’s Cilla Ware’s (an assistant director on Bridget Jones Diary) BAFTA-winning comedy, Dream On.
The festival also aims to find solutions to one of the biggest problems facing deaf filmgoers: distribution and exhibition. DFFF director Matt Hulse rightly points out that if mainstream audiences accept subtitled films, why should they have a problem with titles with sign language dialogue.
The main highlight of this festival will be the one-off special screening on the evening of 6 July of Margerette’s Feast by Renato Falcao.
