The black-and-white film, which became one of the most hotly anticipated local productions of the year following its world premiere, in competition at the latest Berlinale, finally hit Portuguese screens on 1 September, and it has now added these submissions for the two prestigious awards to its CV.

Starring newcomer Miguel Nunes and Margarida Vila-Nova, Letters from War is an adaptation of the book by Portuguese author António Lobo Antunes, which collates the letters he sent to his pregnant wife when, as a young soldier, he was sent to the Colonial War in Africa.

The nominations for the 89th edition of the Academy Awards will be announced on 24 January 2017; the ceremony will take place on 29 February. No date has yet been announced for the upcoming Goyas ceremony.
