Italy joins Ibermedia

Italy is to become a member of the pan-regional Ibermedia programme, financed by 18 members and observers of the CACI, and founded with the aim of promoting the development and co-production of films from the member territories within their own markets and on the international stage. The announcement was made at the MIA International Audiovisual Market in Rome, which came to an end yesterday.

Nicola Borrelli, director general of cinema at the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, declared, “This is the crowning moment of a journey that began years ago, which allows us to work even more closely with our South American friends. We hope we can celebrate some initial successful productions in a few months’ time.”

Argentina’s Alejandro Cacetta, president of the INCAA, stressed how this agreement is a way of realising a huge number of projects: “The influence of Italian culture on Argentina is exceedingly powerful, but we need to promote it even more so that it is reflected in joint projects and cinematic co-productions.” Manoel Rangel (president of ANCINE and executive secretary of the CACI) pointed out, “Italy and Brazil have a cinematic relationship that goes back over 60 years; Italian cinema has always had an influence on the Brazilian film industry, and many of our talents are trained in Italy.”

The agreement was also a chance to announce that Italian international sales agent True Colours is now the international distributor for the Mexican project Almost Paradise by director and box-office champ Gary Alazraki, which was presented at the MIA Cinema Co-production Market. The producer of the film, Edgar San Juan (of Film Tank), has also signed a co-production deal with Indigo Film (the producers of The Great Beauty [+see also:
