Well-travelled Greeks will go head to head with international indie hits in this year’s International Competition, the beating heart of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF, 3-13 November), which will see its expansive set of premieres and retrospectives complemented by a full-scale return of local titles, as the Greeks reclaim their place at the country’s top-tier film gathering.

Inaugurating the Greek Film Festival, a side event running alongside the main festivities, the 57th TIFF will offer local and international visitors alike the chance to sample the full gamut of what the local film industry has to offer. Boasting 27 local titles, including as-yet unseen and already-screened films produced within the last year, the non-competitive panorama will include such movies as Christoforos Papakaliatis’ crowd-pleaser Worlds Apart [+see also:

, fostered at the TIFF’s Agora, where it won two development awards back in 2012, will come full circle back to Thessaloniki, nabbing one of the three spots saved for local entries in the TIFF’s International Competition. Stergios Paschos’ Locarno sensation Afterlov [+see also:

Paying tribute to Argentinian legend Leonardo Favio and France’s subversive Philippe Grandrieux via selective retrospectives, the festival’s homages also include an EU co-funded programme of films focusing on women, an eclectic mix of midnight screenings and an exhaustive retrospective of the work of pioneering Turkish auteur Zeki Demirkubuz.
