The European Film Academy (EFA) has announced the nominees for the European Film Awards in a ceremony held on Saturday at the 13th Seville European Film Festival. German filmmaker Maren Ade's Toni Erdmann [+see also:

, one of this year’s big festival darlings, tops the list of candidates with no less than five nominations, including Best Film, Director and Screenplay, as well as two acting nominations for leads Sandra Hüller and Peter Simonischek.

This year's nominations included for the second time the Best Documentary category, which was usually announced beforehand, alongside the Best Animated Film category (read news). The Academy will also present the winners of the technical European Film Awards (in the categories of cinematography, editing, production design, costume design, composer and sound design), next week.

The awards ceremony will take place in Wroclaw on 10 December. Here is the complete list of nominees:
