By winning the Best Actress Award last night at the 26th Gotham Independent Film Awards, in the face of some stiff competition in the guise of Natalie Portman, Kate Beckinsale, Annette Bening and Ruth Negga, Isabelle Huppert has laid the first stone on the road to the upcoming Oscar, which will be handed out on 26 February 2017, following the final selection of nominees on 24 January.

by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven (unveiled in competition at Cannes and the French candidate for the upcoming Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film), the actress has added an extra trophy to a monumental list of awards that includes two Best Actress Awards at Cannes (in 1978 for The Lacemaker and in 2001 for The Piano Teacher [+see also:

), 13 nominations for the César Award for Best Actress (cashing in on one in 1996), three Lumière Awards, three European Film Awards, one BAFTA, two David di Donatellos and a slew of accolades the world over, including Lifetime Achievement Awards at San Sebastián, Locarno and Karlovy Vary. Oddly enough, despite this impressive tally and her international aura, her talents have never been recognised through a nomination for the Oscar for Best Actress. For the record, 13 actresses have been nominated for the famous statuette with a film in a foreign language (two of whom have won: Sophia Loren and Marion Cotillard).

Elle was released in the United States on 11 November by Sony Pictures Classics and has been performing spectacularly, as in three weeks, it leapt from four screens to 24, then to 36, and has so far grossed $399,232.

Among the next major milestones on the road to the Oscars are the 74th Golden Globes, the nominations for which will be revealed on 12 December, with the ceremony set to take place on 8 January 2017 in Los Angeles.
