Director Stanimir Trifonov

On Friday evening, the Bulgarian National Film Center announced the winners of its second grant session of 2016: several projects will share €2 million, with a supplementary €100,000 being given to co-production projects.

Approximately €1.3 million will be shared by Ivan Nitchev's The Old Dogs, Georgy Kostov's The Rest Is Ashes and Stanimir Trifonov's Bobby the Blessed. An additional €400,000 will be shared by two low-budget features: Lubomir Penchev's Action, and Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov's The Father. At this session, a debut feature, Petrinel Gochev's A Bulgarian Ship Is Sinking, was granted approximately €200,000. Four short films received support, while three screenwriters received development grants.

The producers of the winning films will have to present information about the total budget of their project in front of the Center’s financial committee, with the board deciding only then on the exact amount that every project receives.

Following a different call, the Center also announced the winners of a co-production contest: Nuri Bilge Ceylan's fiction feature The Wild Pear Tree, Boris Misirkov and Georgi Bogdanov's documentary feature The Cars We Drove into Capitalism, and Andrej Volkasin's short film Kolivo will share a little more than €100,000.
