Film Europe launches a new channel

Film Europe Media Company is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the firm’s premium television channel, Film Europe Channel, by launching the new Festival Cinema Channel. Film Europe Channel is the first European channel to air solely European cinema. “[Film Europe Channel] is our most successful television concept, and it will continue to be focused exclusively on European movies,” Film Europe’s CEO, Ivan Hronec, told Cineuropa, adding that “future development and expansion to other territories is the focus for the next year”.

The Festival Cinema Channel, on the other hand, expands Film Europe’s hybrid model of distribution revolving around the company’s Be2Can platform (read the interview). Hronec confirmed to Cineuropa that the newly launched channel will “specialise in films from Be2Can”. Copying the curating concept used by the travelling showcase, the Festival Cinema Channel will serve as a small-screen home for titles on the company’s slate from Berlin, Venice and Cannes. The channel is set to broadcast 52 television premieres per year, kicking off with Andrey Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan [+see also:

and continuing with a collection of Paolo Sorrentino’s films during the Christmas period. The Festival Cinema Channel airs daily from 10 pm to 4 am and is currently available only in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

The company used to operate a trio of channels – Doku CS, Muzika CS and Kino CS – whose content has been transformed and merged into a single channel, Ceskoslovensko HD (“Czechoslovakia HD”), operating during the available slot from 10 am to 10 pm on the same frequency as the Festival Cinema Channel on Astra 3B. Described as “vintage quality TV”, the programming is based on Czechoslovakian archive films, documentaries and music from the period between 1918 and 1992. According to Film Europe Media Company, Ceskoslovensko HD will become “the first audiovisual contribution to the centenary of Czechoslovakia’s foundation” in October 2018. Similarly to the Festival Cinema Channel, Ceskoslovensko HD is currently available only in the territories of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The company reiterated that all three HD television channels are inspired by the current trend towards “quality TV” and represent “a contribution to returning television to the modern cultural audiovisual environment”.
