Revolver and Submarine take Dutch (co-)productions to Sundance
I Dream in Another Language by Ernesto Contreras

No majority Dutch productions have been selected for the upcoming Sundance Film Festival; nevertheless, the vitality and eclecticism of Dutch producers will still be felt at the indie gathering, with a total of four titles (co-)produced by the Netherlands.

Production company Revolver Amsterdam is taking two of the productions from its catalogue to the prestigious World Cinema Dramatic Competition: I Dream in Another Language by Mexican director Ernesto Contreras and Don’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl! [+see also:

I Dream in Another Language follows a young linguist travelling to the Mexican jungle to research and save a mysterious indigenous language on the verge of disappearance, as its last two speakers had a fight over 50 years ago and refuse to speak to each other.

Sundance is certainly one of the best places to launch the film internationally, but even while in development, I Dream in Another Language had already carved out an international profile for itself. Based on an original idea by Revolver Amsterdam, the script was developed at the Binger Filmlab and Jerusalem Film Lab as well as the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, where it received the Sundance-Mahindra Global Filmmaking Award. The MEDIA programme has also supported its development. The Mexican producers are Agencia SHA and Alebrije Cine y Video.

Don’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl! also has Dutch DNA: besides a Netherlands-based co-producer, the film was supported by the IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund, and its score was composed by Dutch musician and DJ Baris Akardere (aka Sotu the Traveller). Also attached to the production are Brazilian companies Duas Mariola Filmes, Mutuca Filmes, Globo Filmes and France’s Damned FilmsDon’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl! is a tale about love and war, telling the story of Joca, a Brazilian boy who falls in love with a Paraguayan girl at the border of their two countries.

Dutch documentary co-productions are also hitting Sundance. Amsterdam-based outfit Submarine co-produced Brian Knappenberger’s Nobody Speak: Hulk Hogan, Gawker and Trials of a Free Press, scheduled to screen in the US Documentary Competition, and Pascale Lamche’s Winnie (read more), included in the World Cinema Documentary Competition.

The Sundance Film Festival takes place annually in Park City, Utah. The upcoming edition will be held from 19-29 January 2017.
