Filmatique.com, an online streaming platform based in New York and dedicated to up-and-coming directors and arthouse cinema, was launched a few weeks ago. It gives the general public of North America an unmissable chance to become acquainted with European movies and those from other continents that have surfaced on the international festival circuit over the last few months, and which are not available on the US market. More titles are added to the library every Thursday, all accompanied by exclusive interviews with their respective directors.

"I think the overarching theme is that important films are rarely commercial – and this must be fought for,” explains head curator Ursula Grisham. “And this is what we do: advocate these films that are socially, culturally or politically relevant, either by publicising them with press and newsletters or, when we can, acquiring them to stream and expand their audience and visibility. That's the advocate part; the curating part is the content we create around the films – aimed to stimulate discourse on both the films themselves and the topics and ways of life they explore. And, of course, we specialise in contemporary world cinema – we stream no classics and so on, unlike some other sites, such as MUBI or Film Struck. In that we are very different.”

Filmatique operates on an SVoD model, with a payment of $4.95 a month. At present, subscribers can take advantage of a free 30-day trial period.
